I thought my password manager was overkill until I got locked out for two days

My old system was just a notebook with passwords written in code. Last week, I forgot the code for my main email and couldn't get the reset link. I spent about 16 hours over two days trying old passwords and answering security questions. I finally got back in after calling the provider and proving my identity with a bill. What do you all use to remember your master passwords?

jakeb81 I disagree, writing it down just creates another thing to lose.

Yeah, the backup plan is key like christopherw34 said. I locked myself out once and now I keep a paper copy in a drawer. Saved me last month.

Man, I saw an article about this exact thing. @nguyen.morgan is right, a paper backup is clutch.

Password managers are the way to go, but you gotta have a backup plan for that master password. I keep mine written down and stored somewhere safe, separate from my computer. It's the only way to avoid getting totally locked out.
