Showerthought: My smart doorbell in Austin got hacked last month and I had to reset my whole home network.

I was at work when my phone started blowing up with motion alerts from my own living room, so I logged into the router and changed all the passwords, which took about 45 minutes. Has anyone else had a smart home device get compromised, and what was the first thing you did?

Was it a Ring doorbell? That's a major violation of your space. I had a similar scare with a smart plug last year and just pulled the plug on the whole system for a week. It really makes you question how safe any of this stuff is.

Yeah, I saw a report about how some of these devices have really weak default passwords. @nguyen.blake is right, it makes you wonder what else is wide open.

Used to think these gadgets were just handy tools. Having my own camera turn on by itself really made me see the risk. Now I get why people worry about their privacy with this stuff.
