Still paranoid after that coffee shop WiFi login page stole my credentials last March

I was at a Starbucks in Austin logged into their free network for 5 minutes and somehow my email account got hit with a phishing wave the next day, has anyone else had a fake login page mess them up like that?

Oh man, I got burned by the exact same thing at a Peet's in Chicago back in March! I clicked on what looked like the normal wifi login, but it was a spoofed page that grabbed my email credentials. The next day, I had 50 phishing emails sent from my own account to everyone in my contacts. A friend of mine who works in IT told me to always use a VPN on public networks, and to never use the same password for email and wifi logins. I also started using a password manager that auto-fills only on legit sites, so if the url is slightly off it won't work. That fake page thing is way too common now, I watch for the little lock icon in the address bar before I type in anything.

Ugh I always thought people were being paranoid about coffee shop wifi but yikes this is making me rethink everything

Yeah but I think the lock icon thing isn't always a safe bet anymore. There was a big thing about how scammers can get SSL certs too now so the lock shows up even on fake pages. @the_olivia honestly it's still smart to be careful on coffee shop wifi, just don't rely on that little icon as your only check.
