Two-factor codes on my backup email got me locked out for 3 days

I set up 2FA on my email with an authenticator app, but when my phone died I tried using the backup codes I saved in a notes file on that same phone. Dumb move, obviously. Now I keep printed codes in my wallet and a second copy in my desk drawer, has anyone else nearly lost access this way?
