Warning: I read that over 80% of data breaches start with a phishing email, which I found in a report from the SANS Institute.

Has anyone else seen a big drop in spam after turning on their email's built-in phishing filter, or is it just me?

My company's IT guy showed me the logs last month... our filter blocked over 2,000 emails in a week, but it let through one pretending to be from our payroll provider. That's the scary part, like @murray.cora said, the obvious stuff is gone so you let your guard down. Now the fake shipping notices look exactly like real FedEx emails. The filters are good, but they train us to ignore the warning signs when a really good fake gets through.

Yeah, the filters work so well it's almost boring now. My inbox feels weirdly empty without the daily "urgent inheritance" offers. Kind of miss the Nigerian princes, not gonna lie.

But what if that empty inbox is making us less safe? We get lazy when nothing obvious is trying to scam us, so the one good fake that slips through has a way better chance. Maybe we need a little spam to keep our guard up.

Google's filter catches about 99.9% of spam now.
