Why does nobody talk about the fact that most smart TVs are basically always listening
I was reading a teardown article on a security blog last Tuesday and the guy hooked a smart TV up to a network monitor to see what it sends out. Turns out it was phoning home to 12 different servers in 10 minutes, even with the TV off, and a bunch of that traffic was audio fingerprinting data. I went home and checked my own TV in the living room and sure enough it was talking to IP addresses I didn't recognize. Now I just unplug the thing when I'm not watching it and use a cheap streaming stick instead. Has anyone else looked at their router logs and seen weird stuff from devices that are supposed to be asleep?
Figured this was just paranoid talk for years, honestly rolled my eyes at people who taped over their webcams. Then my brother set up a pi-hole on our home network and showed me the dashboard one night. Our Vizio was pinging like 8 different domains at 2am while the screen was black and nobody was even in the room. That was the moment I stopped making excuses for it, now the TV stays on a power strip and I flip the switch when we're done watching. It's wild how much stuff we just trust without ever looking.
