Heads up: the open mic at the VFW hall on Route 9 is now 90 percent recycled dad jokes
Stopped by the Friday open mic at the VFW hall on Route 9 last week and counted 14 guys in a row doing the same "I'm reading a book about anti gravity" bit. Nobody laughed after the third one, and the emcee started cutting sets at two minutes flat to move things along. What got me was the sign on the door saying new material welcome, while the same three groaners kept winning the crowd vote. If this is where the good stuff is supposed to surface, we are in trouble. Has anyone found a room in the area that actually rewards a fresh joke over the old faithfuls?
Went through the same thing at a spot in Bristol and what fixed it was getting there early and asking the emcee to slot me in the first five, since the crowd is fresher and the recycled stuff doesn't land yet.
