Bob next door let his yard go for two years, then suddenly it looks like a putting surface. Turns out he just paid a service $180 a month and they aerated, overseeded, and fertilized on a schedule. Now I'm wondering if my DIY approach is actually saving money or just wasting every Saturday.

Wait, $180 a month? For how many months has he been paying that? Because if that's year round, that's over $2,000 a year just to have someone else sweat on Saturday mornings. I mean, my whole DIY setup cost less than that upfront, but then I spent three years fighting crabgrass and dead spots. My yard looks like a patchwork quilt of shame compared to his.
