Found out my old neighborhood's parking lot cameras were selling footage to data brokers
I was reading a report from the Electronic Frontier Foundation last night and stumbled on this stat: over 60% of commercial surveillance camera feeds in my city are shared with third parties without any signs posted. Has anyone actually checked what their local corner store is doing with that camera footage?

The smaller shops are one thing, but what about the big apartment complexes with those license plate readers at the gates? We moved into a new building last year and the lease had a tiny clause saying they could use the gate camera data for "property management analysis." Turns out that means selling it to a company that tracks where you park overnight. My neighbor got a weird targeted ad for a car repair shop after coming home late three nights in a row. Your mileage may vary obviously, but those private lots with the automated gates are probably the worst offenders since they have zero oversight compared to a corner store. Little cameras everywhere now and nobody reads the fine print.
