Got burned by a car rental app's data sharing last month

I rented from Hertz at LAX and used their app to skip the counter. Next thing I know I'm getting spam texts from three different dealerships trying to sell me a car, all within 48 hours. They must have sold my rental info to data brokers without saying anything. Has anyone else had a rental company leak their data like that?

Use a burner email and a virtual card number next time.

That burner email thing reminds me of my cousin who signed up for a free trial of some meal kit service using his main email. For weeks after canceling he kept getting spam from random websites about "delicious dinner solutions" and "chef approved recipes." He finally just abandoned the whole inbox and made a new one. My mom still uses her main email for everything and wonders why she gets 50 spam messages a day about weight loss pills and Nigerian princes.

My cousin did the burner email thing once and ended up forgetting the password to his actual account because he never checked that inbox. Took him a week to get back into his own Netflix. Is it really that hard to just unsubscribe from stuff or mark it as spam?
