Hit 10,000 steps and my watch said I gave away 400MB
I was wandering around the mall in Austin and my fitness tracker counted 10,000 steps, but then I noticed the app was syncing every single store I walked past, including the eye doctor where I stopped for 3 minutes. Turns out the mall's guest WiFi was feeding my location data to a marketing firm, and my step count basically became a shopping map. I get it, they want to sell stuff, but who asked for my shoe size AND my lunch break timing? Has anyone else looked at their data summary and felt like a pawn in some weird retail experiment?
That "shopping map" bit really hit home. I checked my own tracker after reading this and realized it's been logging how long I linger at the grocery store deli counter vs the produce section, which is honestly creepy in a completely different way. I never thought about the mall WiFi angle before, but it makes total sense now that you mention it, they're basically building a behavioral profile off our idle walking around. Honestly feels like we're just unpaid data collectors for their marketing teams.
