Just found out my health app sold my workout data to a research firm without my clear okay
It took me 8 hours of digging through settings and privacy policies to even find the opt-out. Does anyone know a truly private fitness tracker?

Welcome to the club where your abs are public domain.

Yeah, the "public domain" line is spot on, @shanef34. I saw a whole thread about how people feel entitled to comment on fitness pics.

Welcome to the club where your abs are public domain" - lol, but like is it really that deep? I get that people are annoying, but posting stuff online is kinda asking for comments whether you like it or not. Nobody's forcing you to hit the gym and take thirst traps for the gram. Yeah some people are jerks, but most are just saying "nice work" or "what's your routine?" which isn't exactly a privacy violation. If you don't want randos to see it, just lock your account or don't post.

The privacy policy for my old tracker had a clause about sharing "de-identified" data for "scientific advancement." Turns out that meant selling my sleep patterns to an ad firm that also works with insurance companies. It's not just your workout stats, it's your resting heart rate and location data getting packaged and resold. Finding the opt-out is a second job, and half the time they just add a new partner next month. You start to feel like the product is you, not the device on your wrist.
