My smart speaker started playing ads for cat food after I talked about my friend's new kitten

That was three years ago in my apartment, and I used to think it was just a weird coincidence. Now I'm convinced our devices are always listening, so who really owns that conversation?

That line just feels like a default answer they give everyone, even when it's clear they weren't actually paying attention. In my experience, when someone really listens they'll bring up details later that you barely mentioned yourself. It's the difference between nodding along and actually remembering the specifics of what you said. Your mileage may vary, but I've had too many conversations where people say they're listening but then ask a question I just answered 30 seconds earlier. So yeah, that phrase has lost all meaning to me at this point.
