Shoutout to my friend who said 'I have nothing to hide' after giving a quiz app full access to her contacts.

She was shocked when her mom got a spam text about a 'personality test' she took, which made me realize people think data collection is just about ads, not about it being sold and used in ways you can't even see.

Guess she found out her personality test results were "sells friends' numbers for spam.

People willingly trade privacy for convenience all the time.

Trading privacy for convenience is just the modern version of paying for a service. You give a store your address to get a package, you give a quiz app some data to get a result. The spam text is just a bad delivery driver, not proof the whole system is broken.

Buy a burner number from Google Voice or TextNow for the quiz apps. Keep your real number for actual important stuff like banks and delivery people. I've done this for years and it cuts the spam down to almost nothing. That way you still get your fun quiz results but your main line stays clean.
