Showerthought: Remember when you could buy a CD and actually own the music?

Back in 2008, I had shelves full of CDs and felt like I owned my music collection. Now, I pay $10 a month for a streaming service and have access to millions of songs, but I don't own a single one. The switch happened around 2015 for me when my old laptop died and I lost a hard drive full of mp3s. It's easier now, but it feels weird that my whole library can vanish if I stop paying. Has anyone else gone back to buying digital files for stuff they really care about?

Man, I still have a milk crate of burned mix CDs from high school.

Wasn't the whole point of burning CDs to give them away though? I'd make a copy for my crush or a friend going through a breakup, so my own collection never really grew. Those mixes were meant to be passed around, not stored in a crate forever.

Wasn't it always a cardboard box? I swear milk crates were like gold back then. My mixes are all in an old shoebox.
