That local gym in Austin that scanned my ID without asking

I signed up for a drop-in pass at a small gym off South Lamar last month. After swiping my card, the front desk guy scanned my driver's license into their system without saying a word. I asked why and he just mumbled something about 'liability purposes.' I never saw any sign or waiver about them keeping a digital copy of my ID. Has anyone else run into places scanning your personal docs without making it clear upfront?

That's wild they didn't even tell you first. I had the exact same thing happen at a climbing gym here in Denver last summer. The guy at the counter just flipped my ID over and ran it through a scanner while I was still trying to sign the waiver. I asked what he was doing and he gave me some mumbled answer about "insurance requirements." Felt super invasive, especially since there were zero signs up about it.

Devil's advocate here. Most gyms have clauses buried in their fine print about collecting ID data for fraud prevention and chargebacks. A quick scan like that is way less invasive than the background checks some places run or the biometric data some big chains collect from your photos or fingerprints on file. The guy probably mumbled because he's tired of explaining the same policy fifty times a day, not because he was hiding something. If the gym had a legit insurance claim or theft issue, they'd need a verified copy of your ID to protect themselves from liability, and that seems pretty standard for any membership or drop-in spot.

I read somewhere that some states are actually looking into making it illegal for gyms to scan IDs without clear notice. It definitely feels like something they should at least put up a sign for.
