That time my gym used my fitness data to hike my insurance premium

Last month I got a notice that my health insurance went up $20 because my gym shared my inconsistent check-in data with them, but I thought I was opting into personalized workout plans. Are we just handing over data that can be used against us, or is this fair for lower rates on the healthy folks?

Wait so you didn't even know they were selling your check-in data to insurance? That's sketchy as hell. @troy_price is right to ditch the gym app. Like I tell my clients all the time, those "free" apps are just data harvesting tools. They track when you skip leg day then charge you more for the privilege.

Tbh this is exactly why I stopped using my gym's app.

My buddy Mark had something similar happen. He signed up for a gym's "wellness rewards" program thinking he'd get free smoothies, but it turned out they were selling his heart rate data to his life insurance company. He only found out when his premiums jumped because the data showed his resting heart rate was a little high some days. Now he just scans his keycard at the front desk and never wears the fitness tracker they gave him. Honestly, feels like we're all just rats in a data collection maze with nobody asking if we actually want to be there.
