The mall kiosk that took my photo without asking, 2005 vs now
Back in 2005 I stopped at one of those mall photo booths with my girlfriend. Paid $8 cash. Got one strip. Way home she asked if they kept the copies. I laughed, said no way. Fast forward, my niece went to a similar booth at the same mall last month. Took her picture. The display asked if she wanted to send it to her phone. She said yes. It synced straight to her social media. No cash, no question about storage. I looked at the fine print on the receipt. Says they keep the scan for marketing. Nobody reads that tiny text. We laughed in 2005 about the idea of a company keeping our photo. Now it's in the setup screen. Did anyone else think this was a joke twenty years ago?
My local mall photo place has had that phone sync option since like 2016, so I sort of saw this coming. The sticker on the booth says "photos may be used for promotional purposes" in font size 6. So yeah, we laughed then, but it was more of a waiting game than a joke.
