I read that a deepfake of a CEO's voice tricked a UK energy firm into sending $243,000

The article in The Guardian said scammers used AI to mimic the executive's speech. Has anyone else seen deepfakes used for fraud like that?

Mimicking a CEO's voice is wild. Makes me think of that story where a guy almost got scammed by a fake "relative" crying on the phone, but it was just a soundboard.

But isn't that just a new kind of acting?

But what if that's the point? A good scam needs to feel real to work. If a soundboard can make someone panic and send money, then it's doing its job perfectly. The tech is just a tool, and the real trick is playing on people's fears.

Guess we're all going back to written confirmation for everything. The future is a fax machine.
