Just lost $50 to a fake video of a local politician

I saw a clip online where my city council member seemed to be admitting to taking bribes. It looked so real I donated to his opponent's campaign right away. Found out it was a deepfake two days later, and the money was already gone. How do you even check if a video is fake before you react?

Yeah, I learned to check the official campaign page first.

Actually, checking the official page is a good start, but it's not always the final answer. I've seen official pages have wrong dates or old info before they get updated. What I do now is use that as one source, then look for a recent news article or a post from the campaign itself on another site to confirm. It adds maybe two minutes and saves a lot of hassle. Relying on just one place, even the official one, can still trip you up sometimes.

What if the official page is wrong too?
