My cousin showed me a fake video of our grandpa at a party in Chicago last summer.
It was a deepfake someone made as a joke, but for a second I totally believed he was there. It made me realize how easy it is to make a fake memory feel real now. Has anyone else had a moment where a deepfake messed with their head like that?

What did you do after you realized it was fake? I saw a fake clip of a friend saying something awful and just called them directly to check. Hearing their real voice was the only thing that fixed it for me.

Ever notice how this is just the high-tech version of that old family story that gets a little more wild each time it's told? My uncle swears he caught a fish "this big," but the photo looks off. Now instead of just a stretched photo, we can make him say he caught it on the moon. The tools changed but the human urge to tweak reality for a laugh or a better story didn't. It just got way more convincing and harder to spot.
