My cousin's wedding video got a deepfake cameo and it's not funny

Last month, my cousin got married in a small town in Ohio. A week later, someone edited a clip of the ceremony to make it look like a famous actor was giving a toast. It spread on social media and now half the family thinks it's real, even though the actor was filming a movie in Australia that day. I had to show them the original video from my phone to prove it was fake. It took about 45 minutes of arguing. How do you convince people to doubt what they see with their own eyes?

I always show them the original source file first, that usually works.

Had the same thing happen with my uncle's birthday video last year.

Ugh, I read an article about that exact problem, @emeryc21.

That original source file trick is smart, but it only works if you have it. The real problem is people sharing the fake clip without the original. Maybe we need a way to tag videos as "verified source" right in the app, like a little checkmark. That way, before something spreads, you could see if it's the first place it was posted. It wouldn't stop everything, but it would make people pause for a second before believing a deepfake.
