Three seconds into a video call with my cousin and his mouth didnt match his words

I was congratulating him on a new job until I noticed his teeth were lagging behind his voice by half a beat, then it clicked that the whole call was a deepfake. Has anyone else caught a fake just because of weird timing in someone's smile?

Did you report it to the FTC? They handle deepfake scams now.

I mean, "terrifying" feels like a lot lol. It's a bad video call, yeah, but people's connections suck all the time. My mom's Zoom freezes mid-sentence constantly and I don't think she's a deepfake. I've seen the lag where someone's mouth keeps moving after they stop talking, that's just bad internet not some conspiracy. Unless the scammer was targeting him specifically with a fake video, which is super rare, this just sounds like a glitchy FaceTime.

Wait, was his mouth actually lagging or just totally off? That's terrifying honestly, I've seen those deepfake videos online but never thought about catching one in real time with a family member. The timing thing is so creepy because our brains are wired to notice when someone's smile doesn't match their voice. I remember reading that deepfakes mess up micro-expressions around the eyes during laughter or surprise, so if his teeth were lagging it was probably not synced right from the get go. Good on you for spotting it, that could've been someone trying to scam him or worse.
