Watched my niece's video get deepfaked at a family BBQ and now I check everything twice
So we're at my cousin's place last Saturday for her kid's 7th birthday. My niece is running around with a balloon, having a great time. Someone recorded it on their phone and 20 minutes later there's a video of her saying she wants to go home with her dad's brother. Except she never said that. Her face and voice were mapped onto someone else's body shaking their head. It took me 10 seconds to realize it was fake because we were all right there. But if I saw that alone on Twitter I would have believed it. That scared me. How do you guys tell what's real anymore when even family videos can be swapped?

Saw a thing on the news where they deepfaked a politician's voice to call their own office and people bought it. Creepy stuff. Makes you wonder how much we're missing now.

You seen the one where they cloned a CEO's voice to trick the company out of cash, right? @kim.nina my buddy's work got hit with a deepfake call that sounded exactly like their regional manager, had them wire money to a fake vendor. Scary part is they only found out when the real manager asked about the transfer.

Read an article in the WSJ about a finance firm that got hit with a deepfake video call. The scammers used a real employee's face and voice to authorize a $35 million transfer. Only caught it when the bank's fraud team got suspicious weeks later. Makes all those "verify the request" posters in break rooms feel pretty weak now.
