I used to think CoWorking spaces were overpriced until I crunched the numbers on my 2024 expenses

I was dead set against paying $300 a month for a desk at Bamboo Detroit. I figured my home office was fine. But last week I added up what I spent on coffee shop lattes, parking tickets near Sip & Savor, and random WiFi fees from cafes that kicked me out after 2 hours. It came to $487 in January alone. A friend showed me her Ponyride membership where she nets real clients just by grabbing coffee at the communal table. Now I'm on a waitlist for a spot at TechTown. Anybody else surprised by what they actually waste on mobile office setups?

God yes. The "buy something so they don't kick you out" tax is so real. I had a friend who was basically paying $15 a day in avocado toast and chai just to use a cafe's wifi for three hours. That adds up fast. And people forget about the little stuff too, like buying a phone charger at a convenience store because you forgot yours at home, or paying for parking because the street spots are all taken. All those small charges hide in your credit card statement until you actually look.

My neighbor Lisa had the same realization last year. She was spending $340 a month just on gas driving to different Starbucks around town because she couldn't stand working from her apartment. She also bought at least one muffin or sandwich every time so they wouldn't kick her out. Finally she signed up for a desk at Bamboo Detroit and now she says her monthly total dropped to about $250 including parking. She also met another freelancer there who started referring her for small design projects.

Does that include the free coffee they usually have there too?

Free coffee at those coworking spaces is usually not free. It's part of your membership fee and they're making it back on you somehow. The whole point of places like that is to get you in the door and have you spend more on snacks and drinks. It's still a business, not a public library.
