Just landed my first paying client off a cold LinkedIn DM

I sent out like 40 messages last month to small biz owners around Eastern Market, mostly just asking if they needed help with their Google Maps listings. One guy who runs a vintage furniture shop actually replied and now I'm helping him fix his NAP citations across the web. Has anyone else had luck with cold outreach in Detroit or is it just a numbers game?

Funny how that works out, I've been noticing the SAME thing lately - you put in a solid amount of work and then ONE hit makes it all worth it. It's like how I see people in my neighborhood who are still using old paper maps for their business but won't spend five minutes to fix their online presence. That vintage furniture guy probably gets most of his foot traffic from people looking up shops near Eastern Market, so cleaning up his citations is a BIG deal for him. Cold outreach's a numbers game for sure, but it's also about catching people at the right moment when they're actually frustrated enough to want help. Most small biz owners just bury their heads in the sand till someone shows them what they're missing.

Most small biz owners just bury their heads in the sand till someone shows them what they're missing." That part got me. I used to think cold outreach was a waste of time, like you were just bothering people who weren't interested. But you're right, it's more about timing and catching them when they're already frustrated. I've seen it happen with some of my own clients too, where they finally admit their Google listing is a mess after a slow month. Does it take a certain kind of person to just be open to that help right away?

Not really sure I totally agree that timing is everything though. I think some people just aren't ever gonna care about their online presence no matter when you catch them, you know? That vintage guy was probably always gonna be open to help, you just happened to be the one who asked.
