Just realized I was cold-emailing clients completely wrong for 2 years
I used to send these long, detailed emails about my services. Then a guy at Detroit Startup Week told me nobody reads past the first 3 lines. He showed me his stats - open rates went from 12% to 38% after cutting everything down to 3 sentences. Anyone else have a similar wake-up call about their outreach?

Is it really that black and white though? I've seen plenty of detailed cold emails get replies, especially for B2B stuff where the client actually needs to know you're not a spammer. Your mileage may vary with the ransom note approach, but I'd bet it depends a lot on your industry and what you're selling.

3 sentences is generous - I'd argue you really only get one good line and a half before their brain checks out. That Detroit Startup Week guy was basically handing out free money advice. My cold emails now look like ransom notes, short and to the point with zero fluff. The people who actually need what you're selling will respond to a blunt "hey, here's what I do, interested?" without the 5 paragraph origin story.
