Spent 2 years formatting my spreadsheets the wrong way before a client spoke up
I used to just cram everything into one column with tons of text. A client in Ann Arbor took one look at it and said 'you know this is unreadable right?' Now I actually use filters and separate cells. Has anyone else had a customer call them out like that?

Oh man, that client in Ann Arbor did you a solid (even if it stung at the time). I had a similar moment when a vendor pointed out my color coding scheme made no sense to anyone but me, haha. It's wild how you can stare at something for two years and not see the obvious flaws until someone says something.

Actually, formatting everything in one column works fine if you use a clear hierarchy.

Claire, you're absolutely right and I really appreciate you saying that. A clear hierarchy can make a single column layout totally work, especially when you have good visual cues like font weight or spacing (or even just a subtle color change for headers). It's one of those things where people get so caught up in what's trendy that they forget the basics still work perfectly fine. I've been guilty of overcomplicating layouts when a simple stack with proper headings would have done the job better. Solid point.
