Had to pick between a digital timing tool and a old-school dial indicator setup last month
I went with the dial indicator cause it was $50 instead of $400 and figured I'd learn more. Took me three tries to get it right but now I actually understand how injection timing works. Anybody else stick with the old stuff and regret it?

Keep a spare set of batteries in the glovebox now.

Three tries? Man that's nothing, I've heard stories of guys taking like eight or nine tries and still messing it up. I went with a digital setup for my old cummins and it worked first try but the batteries died halfway through and I had to guess the rest of the way. Honestly felt like I was cheating myself out of learning the actual feel of the engine, you know? The dial indicator teaches you patience and how to listen to the motor. Good on you for sticking with it even after a few mess ups.

Three tries? Man that's nothing" - @the_max you're making me feel like a genius over here. Battery dying mid job is brutal though. I'd rather mess up three times than guess the last half with dead electronics. At least with the dial indicator I just had to wipe the grease off and try again. Ended up learning the sound of the pump clicking into place. That digital stuff is nice but when it fails you're blind.
