Just realized my old boss in Phoenix always said 'a clean shop is a safe shop' but never enforced it, and now I see why.

Heard a new guy at my current garage quote that same line while actually sweeping up his bay, and it clicked how much easier it is to spot a small oil leak or a dropped bolt on a clear floor, so do you think that mindset comes from experience or is it something you have to learn the hard way?

Man, that hits home. My first shop was a total mess and I lost so many small parts in the grime. It's like you have to waste your own time a few times before it really sinks in. That phrase is useless if the boss doesn't live by it, so seeing a new guy actually do the work is huge. It definitely seems like a lesson learned from frustration, not just something you hear and believe. Good on him for getting it early.

Yeah, I read this article once about how clutter literally messes with your brain's ability to focus. It was talking about offices, but it's the same in a shop. If your bench is covered in old tools and grime, your eyes just can't pick out the one new drip of coolant or that loose 10mm socket. You're scanning the whole mess instead of seeing the problem. So that phrase isn't just about safety from slips, it's about mental space. A clear floor gives your brain a clean slate to work on. That new guy gets it, he's not just repeating a line, he's making his job easier already.

Got burned by that exact thing at my last shop. I mean, I was rushing a brake job and didn't sweep up first, ended up missing a washer that rolled into a pile of dirt. Took me an extra half hour to find it. After that, I just made it a habit to clean as I go, even if it feels slower. It's one of those things you only really get after you've wasted your own time a few times. The new guy quoting it while actually doing the work is a good sign he gets it already.
