My '98 Cummins threw a rod bearing on I-35 last Tuesday
Had just finished a hotshot run from OKC to Dallas and she started knocking like crazy, so I limped it to a dirt lot and tore it down to find the #6 bearing spun and took the journal with it, anyone else ever try to save a block by welding and turning the crank or is that just asking for trouble again?
Buddy of mine tried that exact thing on a 12 valve about six years ago. He had a machine shop weld up the journal and turn it down, but the crank ended up being out of balance no matter how many weights he messed with. Thing vibrated so bad at highway speeds it shook his radiator loose, and then the bearing failed again within 3000 miles. Last I heard he just swapped in a junkyard short block (honestly cheaper in the long run) and called it a day.
