Old timer told me to never trust a torque wrench off the truck, now I'm wondering if he was right
So I was helping this guy Jim who's been turning wrenches since the 80s on a Cummins swap in a pickup over in Brighton. He kept saying those electronic torque wrenches you buy online are garbage, that you gotta stick with the old beam style or snap-on click type from the truck. I was using my CDI that I got on Amazon and he just shook his head. Fast forward a week later, I checked my torque specs on a head bolt job and found I was off by like 15 ft-lbs with that electronic one. But then I tested his old Proto beam wrench and it was even more off. So which old school advice actually holds up? Has anyone else noticed the old timers being right about some stuff but way off on other things?

Buddy of mine bought a digital torque adapter off some Amazon flash deal, thought he was saving 200 bucks. He was doing the head bolts on a 6.0 Powerstroke and it clicked at 85 but when he double checked with my old beam wrench it was actually at 100. Pulled the head back off and sure enough two bolts were stretched bad. That adapter went straight in the trash.
