Stumbled across a stat about injection pumps that blew my mind

I was reading through some old service manuals from the 90s the other night, and saw that a single inline injection pump on a 1994 Cummins N14 had about 2,000 PSI less fuel pressure than newer common rail systems. Found it in a dusty binder at the shop in Omaha. Makes me wonder how we ever got those old engines to pull a loaded trailer without cracking the injectors. Anyone else run into wild numbers like that comparing old and new gear?

Were those old injection pumps actually less efficient from a fuel delivery standpoint or just built tougher to handle the lower pressure?

Man, I feel you on that. It's rough trying to figure out if they were just overbuilt for that old-school low pressure or if they actually couldn't keep up with the flow.

@hannah320 actually those old pumps were mechanical so they wasted a bit of fuel just spinning themselves, not as precise as electronic ones.
