That $280 rebuild kit from the dealer cost me a week and a new engine
Ngl I figured I was doing the smart thing buying OEM parts for my 6.7 back in March. Paid 280 bucks for the injector rebuild kit instead of the 150 aftermarket one. Turns out the dealer sold me a kit with updated nozzles that needed a different pop pressure setting. Didn't find that out until after I put it back together and the truck started hammering like crazy on cylinder 4. By the time I realized what happened, the piston was scored bad enough that the whole motor had to come out. Spent 4 grand on a used long block from a salvage yard in Ohio. Anyone else get burned trusting the factory parts on these newer common rail trucks? What do you use instead?
Used to be the other way for me. Thought aftermarket was always the gamble and factory was the safe bet. Then my buddy's 6.7 ate a lift pump and the dealer kit he bought had a gasket that was a half millimeter thin. Sealed fine for a week, then dumped fuel right into the oil pan. Wiped out a crankshaft bearing. Cost him way more than the 130 bucks he saved. Now I just buy the injector as a complete unit from a local diesel shop that actually tests them. Saves the headache and the guessing game.
