Update: My old Detroit 60 series went from 4 mpg to 6.5 after swapping the injectors and tuning the pump.
That was after a full rebuild in my shop over two weeks, but now I'm seeing a slight haze at idle, so should I adjust the timing or check for a different issue?

Wow, @xena_bailey18 might be onto something with those weepy lines!

Holy cow, you got a 60 series up to 6.5 mpg? That's wild, I've never heard of one getting that good (most guys I know are happy to see five). A haze at idle after all that work is a real bummer though. I'd double-check the injector seating and the torque on the lines before touching the timing, honestly. Sometimes a tiny air leak or a weep can cause that.

Read a forum post where a guy chased a similar haze for weeks. Turned out to be a cracked injector washer you could barely see. He replaced all the copper seals and the smoke cleared right up. Those old fuel lines can also get a hairline crack that only shows under pressure. Might be worth pulling them off for a real close look.

83 cents each for those copper injector washers at the local diesel shop, and it's insane how such a tiny part can cause that much smoke. @xena_bailey18 is probably right about the air leak or weep thing too, I've seen a loose banjo bolt do the same exact thing. I'd start by pulling the injectors and replacing all the copper seals with new ones, then torque the fuel lines to spec. That haze at idle drives me nuts, it's always the smallest hidden thing causing it.
