My neighbor's kid said my digital portraits looked 'flat' compared to his game art.
He showed me his Blender workflow with three separate light sources, and now I'm redoing all my character art. Anyone have a good tutorial for setting up virtual studio lighting?

What finally clicked for me was learning about rim lights. I mean, I just watched a bunch of short YouTube videos on three-point lighting for digital painting, and it made a huge difference. Maybe try searching for that, it's a pretty simple place to start.

Three point lighting is a good start, but it can make everything look like a studio photo. I tried it for a while and my characters just looked flat and fake under those perfect lights. Real light is messy, like a single lamp from a desk or sunlight through a window. That stuff gives you more interesting shapes and mood than just adding a rim light ever did.
