Set a hard limit on layers and my digital art finally clicked

I mean, capping layers forced me to plan each step and my work got way more put together.

Setting a cap at 5 layers made me think about flat colors differently. I used to rely on dozens of layers for shadows and highlights, but now I have to plan them all on one. How did you pick your layer limit? Was it based on the software or just a random number? I found that limiting layers pushed me to use clipping masks more often. Do you still use adjustment layers, or do those count towards your limit?

Working on a comic panel yesterday, I used 15 layers just for the background gradients. Limiting to 5 would have ruined the depth I was going for, lol. Picking a layer cap based on software feels like letting tools control your art, which is backwards. Clipping masks get confusing fast when you stack too many, layers keep things organized. Adjustment layers totally should count, but they're so key for tweaks that banning them hurts more than helps. If your art needs 50 layers, use them, don't let some random rule stifle your process.

My first digital painting class forced a 3 layer limit, which felt impossible. It taught me to block in values directly instead of relying on separate layers for everything. Now I use more layers but that early restriction permanently improved my color mixing.

Pffft, are we really gatekeeping layers now? Some people work tidy with five, others need fifty messy ones to cook. Maybe the real limit is how serious we take forum advice, huh?
