Spent 6 months layering shadows before a friend pointed out I was blending them all into mud

Turns out I was using a brush that was way too soft and making everything look like a fog bank. Anyone else have a tool that was secretly sabotaging their work the whole time?

Take that cheap synthetic flat brush idea and run with it because that's actually genius for certain textures. I switched to a stiff flat brush for blending and it changed everything, the bristles actually move the paint instead of just whispering over it. The soft brush was basically smearing the colors together without any real control, like trying to mix concrete with a feather. A flat brush lets you push the paint where you want it instead of just creating this hazy mess that turns brown no matter what colors you started with. Plus you can clean it between passes way easier than those fluffy blending brushes that hold onto old pigment like a grudge. The mud phase is real though, I bet half of us are just using the wrong tool and thinking we suck at color theory lol.

That thing about cheap synthetic flats is mostly right but there's a catch. The problem with synthetics in oil or acrylic is they can leave visible stroke marks if you're not careful, especially when pushing paint around for soft blends. Natural bristle flats are actually better for oil because they hold more paint and release it more evenly, synthetics tend to dump it all at once then drag. For acrylics though a soft synthetic flat with some snap is the move, like a Princeton filbert or something similar. And if you're working in watercolor, stiff flats will just tear up the paper, you need something softer but not fluffy like a damp sponge. Point is, one brush type doesn't fix everything across all mediums, gotta match the tool to the paint you're using.

Couldn't you just use a cheap synthetic flat brush for that kind of blending? That's what I always grab when I want to really push paint around.
