That day I spent 6 hours on a single brush stroke
I was working on a portrait commission for a client in Austin last Tuesday, and I got stuck trying to get the highlight on an eye just right. Ended up redoing that one brush stroke over and over across three different layers before I finally stepped back and realized I'd made it way worse. Why do we do this to ourselves when the deadline is breathing down our necks? Has anyone else killed an afternoon fighting a tiny detail that nobody else would even notice?

Six hours on one stroke? I would have thrown my brush through the window by hour two, you've got way more patience than me.

Funny enough I had a buddy who tried something similar with a single brush stroke for a sunset painting. He spent almost eight hours on it trying to get the fade from orange to pink just right. By hour five he was muttering to himself and his coffee had gone cold three times. He finally stood back and realized he'd been working on a tiny section nobody would even notice unless they looked close. Yeah he threw the whole canvas in the trash and started over the next day.

Honestly, I remember reading a blog post by a painter who said if you're stuck on a tiny detail for more than twenty minutes, just walk away. Something about how your brain gets too close to the work and stops seeing it clearly. Sounds like you hit that wall hard, but at least the coffee was probably good.
