I used to think content moderation was just about removing the worst stuff, but a friend in Austin said 'you're not seeing the gray area where good talk gets killed by a bad filter' and it made me look at my own posts differently.

After she pointed out how my own comment about a local protest got flagged for 'violence' just for describing a police barrier, I started checking the appeal logs on every platform I use and saw how often real news gets caught.

Yeah that Austin friend is onto something. My local news page had a post about a water main break with a photo of the flooded street. Got taken down for "dangerous content" because the water looked deep. Had to wait two days for an appeal while people were asking where the updates went. Makes you wonder what else we're missing because a bot got confused.

Seriously, that's not even the worst of it.

Remember when my vacation photos got flagged for "nudity" because of a sunset? The bots are just guessing at this point.
