My moderation reports were doing more harm than good for 2 years
I used to flag every borderline post I saw on a local politics forum, thinking I was keeping things civil. Then a moderator in Columbus messaged me and said my reports were triggering auto-bans on users who were just being blunt, not hateful. I checked over 40 of my past reports and realized nearly a third of them were overreactions on my part. Has anyone else found that aggressive reporting actually chills speech more than it cleans up the conversation?

I mean, I get where you're coming from, but I actually see the reporting system as a pretty useful tool when people use it right. The auto-ban thing sounds like a glitch on the forum's end, not proof that reporting itself is the problem. Maybe the fix is teaching mods to look closer at context instead of telling regular users to stop flagging stuff.

And honestly, that same pattern shows up everywhere, like how people at work will report every tiny mistake to HR and suddenly nobody wants to say anything real in meetings. @dylan_brown30, you're right that the system needs better moderation, but the bigger issue is that constant flagging makes everyone walk on eggshells, which kills honest talk way faster than any troll could. Once I backed off on my own reporting, I noticed the forum got a little messier but way more genuine.
