My uncle told me to stop worrying about my old tweets getting me in trouble, and he was completely wrong.

He said it was all just noise and that nobody really looks back that far. This was about two years ago. Then, last fall, a joke I made in 2015 was dug up and used against me when I was up for a promotion at my job in Portland. It was a dumb, edgy comment from when I was 19. HR called it a 'values mismatch' and I didn't get the role. It feels like we're all just waiting for our past to be used as a weapon. How do you even begin to 'clean up' a decade of online posts? Is it even possible?

Man, that part about "waiting for our past to be a weapon" hits hard. I used to agree with your uncle, thought the internet had a short memory. But seeing stuff like what happened to you, and to some people I know, totally changed my mind. It's not just noise anymore, it's permanent record. Trying to clean up a decade of posts feels impossible, like digging a hole with a spoon. I don't have a good answer, but you're right to be worried about it now.

My old forum posts read like a hostage letter written by a teenage pirate. The only real answer is to hope your future self is too boring to dig up.

Tell me about it. I found a post from 2009 last week that made me want to crawl into a hole.
