Showerthought: Remember when the 'Boston Tea Party' meme got wiped from a major platform overnight?

I was scrolling through my feed in late 2019 when I saw the whole thing vanish. One day, a viral political meme using that name was everywhere, the next, it was just gone, flagged for 'coordinated inauthentic behavior'. No warning, no appeal, just a blank space where a huge debate was happening. It wasn't even about the historical event, it was a modern protest symbol. That was the moment I realized moderation isn't about rules, it's about speed and scale. They can delete a whole idea before most people even understand it. Has anyone else had a specific meme or symbol just disappear like that, and did it change how you post?

That purge felt like a real turning point for online speech.

Turning point for who though? It just made people move to worse places online where there's zero rules. Keith_bennett changed his mind, but that doesn't mean the outcome was good. All it did was push the really nasty talk into darker corners where it's harder to see or deal with. Feels like we just swept the problem under the rug and called it a win.
