A friend told me to always get a local SIM card, and it saved me in Medellin
I was in a cafe in El Poblado trying to close a deal when the wifi dropped, and my eSIM just wouldn't reconnect. My buddy had said 'get a Claro SIM from the corner store, it's like 5 bucks for data,' so I did it as a backup. I was able to hotspot and finish the call, but has anyone else had their fancy eSIM fail when it really mattered?

That Claro SIM saved your one call, not your life.

Always thought those eSIMs were the future, but maybe a cheap plastic card is still the best backup plan?

Seriously! I once dropped my phone in a river and that old SIM card was the only thing that still worked.
