PSA: My laptop charger blew a fuse in a Chiang Mai hostel last night
The whole floor went dark and I had to find a local electrician to fix it before my morning call. Anyone know a good travel adapter that can handle 220 volts without frying?

Used to just grab the cheapest adapter at the airport. Learned the hard way after my hair dryer melted one in Lisbon. Now I only buy ones with a built-in fuse and a clear voltage rating stamped on them. The extra ten bucks is worth not starting an electrical fire.

Check your hotel's bathroom outlet voltage too.

@kim.nina did you check the voltage on your hair dryer too, or was it just the adapter that couldn't handle it?

My buddy tried this once with a straightener in Barcelona, melted the plug and the hotel room smelled like burnt plastic for days. I mean sure, saving ten bucks sounds great until you're explaining to the front desk why their outlet is smoking. Idk maybe it's just me but I'd rather spend the extra cash than have to rewrite my travel plans around a small electrical fire.
