Warning: I lost a whole month's rent on a bad co-living deal in Chiang Mai
I paid $800 upfront for a spot I found through a random Facebook group, but the photos were from years ago and the internet was unusable for video calls. I had to book a last-minute hotel and eat the cost just to keep working. Has anyone found a reliable way to check a place's real internet speed before committing?

Honestly, asking for a video of the speed test is genius. I learned that the hard way too. I once made a host send a screenshot and it was totally fake, just a picture they saved from some other test. My video calls looked like a pixelated slideshow for a week. Tbh, I felt like a total chump for not thinking to ask for a live video. Now I won't even talk about a place until I see that video proof with the current date.

Yeah asking for a speed test like dixon.james said is the bare minimum. I make them send a video of the test results, not just a screenshot. Saved me from a couple scams last year.
