Why does nobody talk about the visa gamble when you pick a base for a year?
After settling in Lisbon for a planned 12-month stay, my freelance income dipped for two months straight, and now I'm staring down the real income requirements for my residency permit with a lot less buffer than I had back in January.

Did you check if the visa rules let you average your income over the year, or is it a strict month-by-month thing?

Doubt it's the visa rules causing the real pain, foster.tessa. Freelance work always has slow months, and everyone knows travel costs more than you plan. Bet you just didn't save enough for the gaps, which is a normal mistake. Maybe the real surprise was not having a backup fund?
