After that cafe WiFi got spoofed at SXSW last year I stopped using public networks for anything involving my bank account.
Had some dude clone the login page and I almost put my password in before catching the weird URL, has anyone else caught a fake hotspot at a conference before?

I mean, honestly, those fake hotspots are pretty easy to spot if you just pay attention. The URL is always slightly off or the encryption isn't there. Maybe it's just me but I feel like people get spooked too easily, like just use a VPN and you're fine.

People underestimate how many of these hotspots are set up with HTTPS but still fake, so @charles_young92 a VPN only protects you if the hotspot itself isn't redirecting your traffic first.

People really do get sloppy at big events... saw a guy type his hotel login into a fake Starbucks portal last year at CES. VPN won't save you if you're handing the keys over on the first page. That little URL check is the only thing that stops it.
