Can we talk about old writing communities and privacy?

I remember joining forums just to share my stories and chat. These days, every click is tracked and data is collected. It feels like we lost something simple along the way.

Yeah it's like that everywhere now. Even my local hardware store tracks purchases to send coupons, so nowhere feels like just a chill hangout spot anymore.

Exactly, it's like that simple trust is just gone now. I see this everywhere, like how you can't even buy a coffee without them asking for your email or phone number. Everything feels like a transaction where your attention or data is the price. That old forum vibe was special because it was a SMALL corner of the internet you chose to visit, not a place that was constantly studying you to sell you stuff. Now the whole internet, and a lot of the real world, feels like one big mall where you're always being watched. We really LOST those little pockets of genuine connection.

Man, you hit on something real there. I miss those old forums where you just had a username and maybe an avatar, and that was it. It felt like showing up to a specific room to talk about one thing, not getting watched the whole time. The tracking now makes everything feel kind of gross and performative, like you can't just have a thought without it being part of some profile. That simple joy of sharing stuff just for the sake of it is totally gone.

But wasn't that total anonymity a huge part of the problem sometimes? You never really knew who you were talking to, and bad actors could just ruin a thread and vanish. The tracking now, sure it's creepy, but it also adds some basic accountability. We lost the totally casual feel, yeah, but I'll trade that for being able to sort of trust that the person I'm talking to is a real account and not just chaos. It's easier now to actually find your people and have a real talk, even if the system is watching.
