Dropped $80 on a VPN that logged my data anyway

I signed up for SecureSurf VPN last month after seeing their ads everywhere, figured $80 was worth keeping my browsing private. Then I dug into their privacy policy and found a line about collecting "anonymized usage stats" which turned out to include timestamps and IP addresses. Did anyone else get burned by a privacy tool that wasn't as private as they claimed?

Wait, you actually thought "anonymized" meant they wouldn't track anything? That word in privacy policies pretty much always means they strip your name but still log activity. Every VPN I've seen does this to some degree - they need some data to troubleshoot issues or prevent abuse. SecureSurf's policy is actually pretty standard. The bigger problem is you paid $80 without reading what you agreed to. Next time check the fine print before handing over your card info, or at least pick a provider that's been audited by a third party.

Wait, you actually paid $80 for SecureSurf? I thought that was one of those free VPNs you see advertised on sketchy YouTube channels.

That's the thing about paid services, people assume they're automatically better than free ones but sometimes they just put a price tag on the same old shady practices. It's like buying a fancy lock for your front door without checking if it actually keeps anyone out. You can toss money at something all day but it won't protect you unless you take the time to understand what you're actually paying for.
